NordEcoJam 2022 was a student game jam focused on environmental sustainability that took place in Tallinn, Estonia on June 13–17, 2022. 29 students from the six partner universities (Tallinn University, IT University of Copenhagen, University of Skövde, Uppsala University, University of Turku, and University of Iceland) participated in the event.
The event featured workshops led by network members and invited speakers, including game researchers Ben Abraham, environmental scientist Jaanus Terasmaa, and Paula Escuadra from the International Game Developer Association’s Special Interest Group on Climate. The workshops covered topics ranging from an overview of global environmental challenges, to the limitations of carbon offset programs, to designing videogames more sustainably.
During NordEcoJam, participants were divided into international teams and given the task of creating prototypes of digital or non-digital games that would address issues related to environmental and cultural sustainability. Overall, participants created six game prototypes, ranging from a card game about greenwashing to a city building simulation with an environmental twist.
